16:8 fasting schedules for real life
16:8 means fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window. It's the most common form of time-restricted eating. Here are three schedules that fit real days, what to do when life gets in the way, and what the trials actually found.
Three schedules that fit real days
12:00–20:00 · Skip breakfast
The classic. Lunch and dinner at the usual times; water, black coffee or unsweetened tea in the morning. Works well if you're not hungry early.
09:00–17:00 · Early dinner
Breakfast and lunch as usual, dinner by 5 pm. Suits early risers who like a light evening. Harder with family dinners.
14:00–22:00 · Shift work
Moved later for evening or late shifts. Keep the 16-hour gap around your sleep, whenever that is.
When plans change
A dinner out, a late meeting, a bad week. Move the window, shorten the fast to 14:10 for a day, or skip it. One missed day doesn't erase a habit. KYNIO keeps your streak with a grace day, for everyone, so one miss doesn't reset a month.
What 16:8 does, and what it doesn't
- 12-month trial: adding an 8-hour eating window to calorie restriction didn't lead to significantly more weight loss than calorie restriction alone (Liu et al., NEJM 2022 · PMID 35443107).
- 12-week trial: 16:8 with no other changes had a modest effect, not significantly different from the control group (Lowe et al., JAMA Internal Medicine 2020 · PMID 32986097).
The honest takeaway: 16:8 is a structure that helps some people eat more consistently. It isn't a shortcut, and how much you eat overall matters more than the clock.

Questions
Can I drink coffee while fasting?
Most 16:8 protocols allow water, black coffee and unsweetened tea during the fasting window. Milk, sugar and snacks end the fast.
Is 16:8 better than 14:10?
There's no strong evidence that one window beats the other for most people. Pick the one you can keep on most days.
Should I skip breakfast or dinner?
Either can work. Choose the window that fits your mornings, your work and your family meals.
Will 16:8 make me lose weight?
Only if it helps you eat less overall. In trials, the eating window alone didn't add significant weight loss.
Who should not fast?
